Hi, I’m Bex
My storytelling career began in journalism - I spent over a decade working in media, from reporter all the way up to editor. That background shapes everything I do now.
After having my two boys, I decided to take the leap into self-employment and have worked with local authorities, universities, non-profits and small businesses to support them and become their comms partner to tell compelling stories in the press.
I’m Bex Bastable - a journalist and communications strategist specialising in storytelling with purpose.
My experience
11+ years in local and regional journalism
Former newspaper editor, responsible for editorial strategy, commissioning and audience trust
Former commercial editor, developing ethical partnerships and sponsored content
Now a freelance journalist and consultant, working with organisations that care about impact, place and credibility.
I’ve written, edited and advised on stories covering communities, sustainability, the green transition and social impact — always with a focus on clarity, honesty and human relevance.
My clients’ stories have appeared in media including BBC News, Positive News Magazine, The Times, The Argus, The News Portsmouth, Sussex World, BBC Radio Sussex, V2 Radio and more.
How I can support you
-
I help mission-driven organisations, media outlets and community projects tell their stories clearly and credibly - without the fluff or corporate noise.
That includes:
Editorial strategy and content development
Storytelling for sustainability and social impact
Ethical commercial partnerships and sponsored content
Journalism-led communications that put trust first
My work is grounded in editorial judgement - knowing what makes a story land, what builds trust, and what audiences can spot a mile off.
-
I come from journalism, not marketing — which means I:
care deeply about accuracy and credibility
understand audience trust as a long-term asset
believe good stories should inform, not manipulate
I’m especially interested in work rooted in place, community and the green transition, and in helping local and independent media find sustainable ways to thrive.
I believe storytelling can be a tool for change - when it’s done thoughtfully.
If you’re looking for someone who understands both editorial integrity and strategic impact, I’d love to talk.
